Paul Cabuts

Paul Cabuts uses photography to examine the visual history of the Valleys of south Wales in the UK. He was initially motivated by the differences between his personal experiences of living and working in the Valleys, and the way in which the region had been represented in photography and other media.

“The contradictions and complexities I encountered in making photographs led me to develop a practice that engages in both picture making and research. My photographic work offers me the opportunity to explore the culture and physicality of a region that had previously been interrogated by a number of renowned international photographers. Through research into their work it has been possible to build an understanding of their imperatives, and to reveal the differing forces shaping their output. My work offers an alternative response to what, in relation to the south Wales Valleys, became established modes of photographic representation. Not least my survey, which has extended over two decades, explores the residual, emergent and oppositional cultural elements relating to a society radically shaped by the systems and processes of expanding free market economies".
